As we age, maintaining good oral health becomes increasingly important. However, for many senior citizens and residents in Canada, accessing affordable dental care can be a challenge.Upon understanding this need, the Canadian government introduced the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), designed to alleviate the financial burden associated with essential dental services for seniors and eligible adults. At Uptown Oakville Dentistry, we are dedicated to supporting the senior community by providing professional care and tailored solutions to meet their oral health needs.

The CDCP is a comprehensive dental care plan aimed at covering a wide range of oral health services essential for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. From preventive measures like cleanings and fluoride treatments to restorative services such as fillings and root canal
treatments, the CDCP ensures that seniors receive the care they need to prevent and treat oral health issues and diseases.

One of the key features of the CDCP is its coverage of various dental services recommended by oral health providers. These include:

  • Preventive, including scaling (cleaning), sealants and fluoride
  • Diagnostic, including examinations and x-rays
  • Restorative, including fillings
  • Endodontic, including root canal treatments
  • Prosthodontic, including complete dentures and partial removable dentures
  • Periodontal, including deep scaling and
  • Oral surgery services, including extractions.
It’s important to note that some services may require preauthorization, which involves prior approval based on the recommendation of the oral health provider. This ensures that treatments are covered under the plan and take into account an individual’s oral health history and medical conditions.

The CDCP operates on established fees specific to the plan, which may differ from the fees outlined in provincial and territorial oral health association guides. While the plan covers essential services, individuals may be responsible for additional charges not included in the
CDCP fees. However, the overall aim of the plan is to make dental care more accessible and affordable for seniors and eligible adults across Canada.

Understanding the application process for the CDCP is crucial for those looking to benefit from its coverage. Seniors aged 70 and above were the first group eligible to apply, with applications starting in December 2023 and ongoing. For seniors aged 65 to 69, applications began in May 2024, Additionally, adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate can apply starting in June2024. These application schedules ensure that eligible individuals can access the dental care they need in a timely manner.
